General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
The following things can be inferred based on the Liver Function Test (LFT) report you have furnished.
1. Total Bilirubin with 3.56 is higher than normal (Normal: 0.2 to 0.8 mg/dl).
2. Direct Bilirubin with 0.68 is slightly higher than normal (Normal: 0.2 to 0.4 mg/dl).
3. Indirect bilirubin with 2.88 is higher than normal (Normal: 0.2 to 0.8 mg/dl).
4. SGPT with 18 U/L is within normal range (Normal: 5 to 40 U/L).
5. SGOT with 17 U/L is within normal range (Normal: 5 to 35 U/L).
6. Gamma GT with 21 U/L is within normal range (Normal: 10 to 48 U/L).
Since the enzyme levels are within normal range, there is no evidence of dysfunction in the liver tissue with conditions such as hepatitis.
But, the bilirubin is increased and particularly indirect bilirubin is proportionately more, and hence it is indicative of pre-hepatic jaundice.
It may be caused due to excessive destruction of Red Blood Cells (RBCs) due to various causes such as sickle cell disease, hereditary spherocytosis or Glucose-6-Phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, which needs to be further investigated and treated accordingly.
Kindly consult Physician with the report for proper evaluation and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
